Follow the Lights to Miami’s Hot New Neighborhoods Little River and MiMo, both once off travelers’ radar, capture the creative flavor of the city.
Contemporary galleries are stippled throughout the neighborhood, including Primary, Homework and Dot Fiftyone, all showcasing edgy, boundary-pushing work, and a printmaking studio called Miami Paper & Printing Museum, which holds bookbinding and pattern block printing classes. The neighborhood’s creative footprint will expand when the 40-year-old visual arts nonprofit Oolite Arts, which provides resources to local artists, opens its new campus (set for 2026) in a complex of five converted warehouses designed by the architecture firm Barozzi Veiga.

Why Nomadic Galleries Are Popping Up Everywhere
What do we think of when we think about art galleries? Broad walls, glass storefronts, and brick-and-mortar spring to mind. Galleries are often associated with where they are and how they present their space, as well as the art that they show. Are they a white cube space? A converted townhouse? A dealer’s actual house?

At Miami’s “Smaller” Fairs, Textiles and Softness Take the Stage
Around the corner, at Homework Gallery’s booth, Caribbean artists Julián Chams and Patricia Encarnación explore the multifaceted concepts of time, nature, and identity while shedding light on the traces of their similar yet distinct Caribbean cultural heritage. Chams and Encarnación both feature work atop repurposed tree trunks. One of them was found just a few weeks ago after an uncharacteristically brutal storm hit Miami outside of Hurricane Season. Chams’s “Colección #6 (Cielo y rocas, Vieques)” (2023) features a tapestry on cotton batting and jute and other natural textiles sourced from Colombia and images the artist took while visiting Puerto Rico during the pandemic. While Chams is Colombian, he longed for a tropical space that reminded him of home, and Puerto Rico offered him that reprieve when he was restricted from leaving the country.

Nomadic Homework Gallery Launches Two Summer Shows in Two Locations
Pipes coming out of walls, derelict machinery yet to be carted away — contemporary art gallery Homework’s newest temporary home is a far cry from the pristine walls of a museum. Yet Aurelio Aguilo, who cofounded Homework Gallery with his partner Mayra, isn't fazed by the abandonment. “It’s curatorially interesting,” he says.

They brought with them a group of emerging Latinx artists working in a variety of mediums. Particularly impressive were the ink-on-paper works of Mayte Nicole, which applied the traditionally Asian technique in a tropical Latin idiom, and the colorful geometric paintings of Gustavo Peña.
