Roscoè B. Thické III’s work explores memory, perspective, and personal history through a mix of photography and sculptural elements. His signature use of diamond-shaped window grates and a distinct shade of blue comes from his childhood. The grates, inspired by the windows of his childhood home, symbolize how he saw the world growing up. In this series, he shifts the perspective, allowing viewers to look outward through the grates onto imagined scenes from his past. The blue is drawn from the color of his grandmother’s house, a place filled with family history and nostalgia. Layering black and white photography with blue plexiglass, he creates a dreamlike quality that blurs past and present.
Beyond personal memory, his work reflects themes of family and identity. In some pieces, the grates are physically enlarged, adding texture and depth. His son appears in this work, highlighting the role of fatherhood in his practice. His children are often either in the images or right beside him as he captures them. By incorporating these personal elements, his work moves beyond documentation, offering a deeply felt perspective on how memories shape the way we see the world.
