For the Nest sector of Untitled Art 2024, homework proudly presents a solo booth titled 'nieve de mamey' by Ilsse Peredo, a 27-year-old Mexican visual artist based in Miami. The mamey, a fruit deeply rooted in Mesoamerican culture, symbolizes fertility, life cycles, and the interconnectedness of past and future, offering a profound metaphor for embracing loss and renewal as part of life's natural rhythm.

Peredo is currently featured in our ‘mujeres’ exhibition, where she explores the tragic, multigenerational consequences of femicide, which is the leading cause of death for women aged 19 to 44 worldwide. This brutal reality claims not only lives but also the identities, stories, and dreams of countless women. These losses go beyond the act of murder, seeping into media and society, where victims are often blamed, and perpetrators remain unpunished.

Mexican culture, like many cultures in the East, holds a profound relationship with death and memory. At Untitled Art, Ilsse continues her exploration of loss and its effects on identity by exhibiting selections from her photographic archive taken mostly during this year’s Day of the Dead, capturing the architecture and people of her native Mexico, alongside a subtle immersive installation that recreates a fragmented memory of a grandmother’s living room, her work reflects on heritage, memory, and self-discovery, offering a nuanced meditation on these themes.

Her photography serves as a visual journey spotlighting underrepresented voices and societal taboos. Each image, while surely aesthetically beautiful, can also act as a social critique, revealing hidden narratives and encouraging empathy as it chronicles cultural histories and confronts difficult truths. By crafting multidimensional spaces that engage the senses, her work transforms art into a medium for liberation, reflection, and reconnection with one’s origins. Aligned with the fair’s mission to bridge perspectives and inspire dialogue, Peredo’s work underscores the role of creativity as a tool for healing, unity, and transformative change within a sustainable global art ecosystem.
